Endurance 08:16
December, 1913. Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, constant danger, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success. Calling on my brothers of the sea We must go beyond Summoned to a greater cause are we Die and live on We men of fate Plunging into endless sea Southward ever by the lee Honor us when we are gone Endurance carry on On this lonely ship we make our home Far from distant coasts Over ragged waves and white cap foam Faces like ghosts We men of fate Navigating by the compass rose Spurn the northern star Onward to Antarctica she goes Hold fast the spar We men of fate Plunging into endless sea Southward ever by the lee Honor us when we are gone Endurance carry on Endurance carry on The noise resembles the roar of heavy, distant surf. Standing on the stirring ice one can imagine it is disturbed by the breathing and tossing of a mighty giant below. We had seen God in His splendors, heard the text that Nature renders. We had reached the naked soul of man. Over the frozen seas Over the icy main Creatures of nightmare rise On the forsaken plain Now in your darkest hour Follow the master plan Into the howling wind Carry the hope of man Into Antarctica On the Endurance sail Down in the coldest hell Living to tell the tale Yonder is our reward Somewhere across the void Steeling your heart for pain Ready for hope destroyed Step after step walk on Night after night awake Trust in your comrades Death at the first mistake Over Antarctica As the Endurance falls Carry the hope of man Carry a light for all

Gaze with cloudy eyes There is no path here Suffer, stagger on Following shadows Unseen terrors abound See your death a thousand times You killed the dogs They devour your soul The cold becomes my heart I’ve taken lives saving mine Am I to walk alone As a chill runs down my spine Captain, we starve We’re running out of time Is there any hope Captain, we thirst We’re out here going blind Is there any hope The men who made these tracks Left only a dead-end trail The shelters are all bereft Yet we will prevail Fall, rise, fly, stay and die Run to light, fear the ice I called to the other men that the sky was clearing, and then a moment later I realized that what I had seen was not a rift in the clouds but the white crest of an enormous wave.

Come, play in the waves Never mind the crags and caves See these beauties upon the tide And all the sailors who have died Find a way through the Endless plains of ice Reflection of white in your eyes Turn away from men Can’t you hear me Calling up from the sea Fall into the blackest deep Down to where the sirens sleep That’s where you will know You are owned by the ocean Someday you will follow me Our souls will rest upon the sea That’s when you will know You are owned by the ocean Maidens beckon you down Join in a dance of death Shattered dreams follow I consume your heart Sail on, fool, sail on Your hope is long lost So here is one last kiss Before you slip away And fall into the blackest deep Down to where the sirens sleep That’s where you will know You are owned by the ocean Someday you will follow me Our souls will rest upon the sea That’s when you will know You are owned by the ocean [Guitar Solo – Mitch]

Darling, forgive me I know that you told me Not to stay up through the night But the day’s growing long And the ice is all gone It’s time you returned from the fight This crazy excursion Their pride and coercion A better man will not make you But I knew at that second That the Arctic had beckoned And your place was there with the crew And I’m not quite sure what it is you think you have to prove I’ve tried so hard not to despair As I’m writing to you But I’ve never been quite so scared when I think about you I hope it’s not true Two years have passed Since I saw you last From your crew there’s been nary a sound Your daughters are home now And though you’ve never met them Soon they will need you around And I’m not quite sure what it is you think you have to prove I’ve tried so hard not to despair As I’m writing to you But I’ve never been quite so scared when I think about you I hope it’s not true In my nightmares I’m falling The sirens are calling The wreckage is drifting away Where are the others My comrades, my brothers Have I been led so far astray? I reach out my hand To a shadow on land But the ocean is where I will stay And though dreams are but figments Of imagination Here is the postman Head hung in resignation And now I have come To this realization To this letter not written by you And whatever life brings At the end of all things I know that you’ll carry me through And I’m not quite sure what it is you think you have to prove I’ve tried so hard not to despair As I’m writing to you But I’ve never felt quite so lost when I think about you For I know that it’s true [Guitar solo – Dan]

about

"Prevail" tells the story of Ernest Shackleton's legendary 1914 expedition to cross Antarctica. "The songs on Prevail are undoubtedly more complex and layered than anything else in the Taravana discography...allowing a natural progression through different musical themes.Prevail is an excellent album, and the consistent strength of Newton’s work should leave us all excited to see what Taravana will have in store for us in 2016." (4.5/5)

"This album is so wholesome and well-arranged that it is a great example of a folk metal album done right...The title track has one of the best guitar leads I’ve ever heard." (4.5/5)
